School closures will tear communities apart, exacerbate issues of inequity in schools, and catalyze family flight from San Francisco. Parents and students are fighting hard to ensure that doesn’t happpen.

Instead of relying on temporary solutions like stopgap taxes, we should reform Proposition 13 to address the underlying issue. Ensuring stable and sufficient funding for public institutions like the Berkeley Public Library requires long-term structural changes to our tax system, not just short-term fixes.

Parental notification policies are an infringement on the rights and safety of LGBTQ+ students. The SAFETY Act signed by Governor Newsom is one step of many to protect LGBTQ+ rights in schools in the state.
