How Trump’s Win can Negatively Transform UC research, LGBTQ+ rights and student loan forgiveness

The Trump win puts the future of education up for a problematic reshaping. Throughout his campaign, Trump expressed his plans to eliminate the federal Department of Education and, amongst other things, cut funding for LGBTQ+ protection in schools. The Trump administration’s idea of student success and holding educational institutions accountable is slashing federal financial aid and ending Biden’s student loan forgiveness efforts. Other areas of education that could be affected by his administration are civil rights, research funding, immigrant rights, and childcare/Head Start/early childhood education. These topics are being discussed again because of the fear that the new administration will create policies that eliminate or limit student success in our education system, especially students in marginalized communities.

In the next four years, having proper funding is crucial–especially since the Trump administration is targeting education. This is why it is even more important to have secure funding. Reform Prop. 13 would ensure that schools are fully-funded here in California, especially since Trump has threatened to cut funding for the UC system. If he does, how are these universities going to fit the needs of their students? If Trump successfully removes funding for financial aid, how will universities provide assistance to make higher education accessible? The billions of dollars corporations pocket every year in California could be utilized when Trump’s threats come true. We can not sit and wait for our universities to become more and more exclusive, we need to continue the fight for higher education accessibility!
